Dress fabric is in demand in Lancaster County in part because of the fact that most of women in the “Plain” community (Amish and conservative Mennonites) wear hand-made dresses.  In fact, many of the ladies make their own dresses, and many mothers make the dresses their daughters wear. The Amish wear clothing made from solid-colored fabrics, while ladies from the various Old Order and conservative Mennonite congregations generally prefer fabrics with printed designs, especially floral prints.

Tropical Breeze Fabrics™ is one of our most popular brands. These fabrics are designed in Lancaster County by Good’s Distribution, then manufactured overseas, then imported and distributed by Good’s Distribution. Tropical Breeze Fabrics™ offers a full line of polyester and poly/cotton blend dress fabric, which is known for its easy care and

durability. All of our material is designed to hold up with repeated washings. We strive to provide durable and high-quality fabrics so your sewing creations can be long-lasting and beautiful. Our in-house designers create florals, patterns, plaids, and stripes, as well as solid color fabrics that are satiny smooth, crinkled, textured, or embossed with beautiful patterns. There is a wide variety of prints, and new designs come out regularly.

Sewing projects

Quilting has deep roots in the Pennsylvania Dutch (German) community, of which Amish and Mennonites are a part. Germans began settling in Pennsylvania within a few years of William Penn establishing Philadelphia, and were among the earliest Europeans to live in Lancaster County. Most of them identified with the Lutheran or German Reformed churches, although there were also Quakers, Moravians, Catholics, and Anabaptists (Amish, Mennonites, and Brethren). Despite the doctrinal differences, many of these immigrants came from a similar culture and spoke similar German dialects. In Pennsylvania, a common German culture emerged, including the Low German dialect known as Pennsylvania Dutch (or Deitsch, meaning “German”).

In keeping with most other European and American cultures, the Pennsylvania Dutch viewed sewing and needlecrafts as women’s work. Making quilts for beds was a widespread craft among Pennsylvania Dutch women. They used mostly solid-colored fabric pieces to create geometric

patterns which many people today find very attractive. Many people see the combination of utility (the quilts are meant for use on beds) and art (they are visually attractive) as a unique characteristic of Pennsylvania Dutch culture. Quilting remains a popular needlecraft among Amish and Mennonite women today (and some men too!). It is often a group activity, stitching together both fabric and lives at the same time. Quilts are a regular feature at many benefit auctions in Lancaster County, including mud sales (which benefit local volunteer fire companies) and fundraisers for organizations such as the Mennonite Central Committee and the Clinic for Special Children. Quilts can also be purchased from many shops in Lancaster County.

Due to the time involved in making a quilt, as well as the general durability of the finished product, quilts are often treasured as family heirlooms, being handed down through several generations. Quilt-making remains a vibrant craft in Lancaster County, and not only among Amish and Mennonites. Quilt shows in the vicinity of Lancaster are held annually, drawing thousands of visitors.
