Enjoy a Backyard Cutting Garden

Enjoy a Backyard Cutting Garden

Jan 29, 2026Dan Zimmerman

Who doesn’t enjoy fresh-cut flowers?  Even if you are allergic to some flowers’ fragrances, the colors are wonderful.  Jesus Himself alluded to this when He stated that even King Solomon, in all his glory, was not dressed like one of God’s flowers.

Trisha Snyder loves flowers, and loves bringing flowers into the lives of others.  Introduced to gardening as a child, she began the business that is now Flourish Flowers in 2001 by planting some tulip bulbs in her small backyard in East Earl Township.  The flowers grew, and so did her business.  Brides approached her to do the flowers at their weddings.  To gain greater knowledge, Trish earned a Certificate of Merit in Floral Design from Longwood Gardens in 2013.

The growing business moved to its current location along Route 23 on the edge of the community of Goodville (about a mile east of Good’s Store).  This property was larger, allowing an acre of flowerbeds and a building, once used as a chicken barn, in which to host classes.  Flourish Flowers was flourishing!

Flourish Flowers currently offers a Flower Bar, classes, and two event spaces, the Flourish Barn and the Garden Pergola.  More information can be found at https://flourish.flowers.

Trish noticed that most flower and gardening books don’t really explain how to develop a cutting garden in a small space, such as the one that she started with.  So, in 2019, she started working on a book of her own that would help people to create and maintain one.  The process of writing the book took time, in part because the photographs of flowers needed to be taken at the right time of year.  After several years of working on it, Trish’s book is now published.

Backyard Cutting Garden: Small Space Blooms to Grow, Harvest, and Arrange in Every Season is a comprehensive guide that steps you through the creation of a vibrant seasonal flower garden, even in a small space, yielding gorgeous blooms for a variety of occasions and seasons.  Trish offers advice on laying out the garden, preparing the soil, planting the flowers, caring for them, and harvesting them.  There are profiles on more than 40 common flowers and plants, both annuals and perennials, including bloom times and tips on growing and cutting them.  Finally, there are 20 detailed step-by-step projects to bring your blooms indoors as wreaths, bouquets, corsages, sprays, and more.  Whether you are an experienced gardener, floral designer, or a beginner, the book will help you to create an inviting garden full of color and charm.

On Friday, February 6, 2026, Trisha Snyder will be at the East Earl Good’s Store to sign copies of her new book and to meet and chat with people, from 10:30 am to noon.
