As might be known to most, Lancaster County is home to a large Amish community and they possess considerable skill in craftsmanship. Amish craftsmanship focuses on durability and functionality and they strive to create only high-quality, sustainable items. The Amish might be most known for their skill in making high-quality furniture, but they are also skilled in creating educational, wooden toys for children. While they carry the same high-quality values in their toys, they focus on education versus entertainment.
For example, we had the opportunity to interview the owner of the local business, Lapp’s Toys and Doll Furniture. They have provided families with quality children’s toys and furniture since the late 1970’s. Their collection of heirloom quality, handcrafted wooden products are built to stand the test of time and are meant to be carried on through many generations. Here, you will find the most basic of designs for toy airplanes, cars, trucks, etc. The reasoning is that it’s better for the child’s brain to make the noises and move the vehicles themselves. These days, it’s hard to escape being entertained by a screen, which could stunt young minds when it comes to creativity and imagination. One of our more popular brands is Melissa & Doug. Their classic wooden toys and detailed pretend play sets encourage imagination in children and can help develop motor skills. The collection called “Let’s Explore” encourages children ages three and older to connect with the natural world through imaginative play and helps them discover the joy of outdoor activities that instill curiosity and confidence. We sell plush animals and dolls from Ganz. From Ty, we stock beanie babies, squish-a-boos, keychains, and more. Living Nature offers a wide range of stuffed animals, which are perfect for snuggling. We also carry Warmies. Warmies are stuffed animals of varying sizes that are weighted with grains that are gently scented with lavender, which provides a naturally sweet and calming aroma. These can be a great comfort for children at bed time or when they aren’t feeling well.
Good’s Store also has a collection of crafts for every one of all ages. Some of our children’s crafts include paint by numbers, latch hook kits, Klutz kits, Perler beads. From Harrisville Designs Inc., we carry looms, crochet kits, needlepoint kits which are perfect for beginners.
You’ll also find an extensive assortment of books for children at Good’s Store: bibles, board books, poke-a-dot books, sticker and coloring books from Dover Publications, baby books, classics such as Curious George, Billy and Blaze, Clifford, and more. If you’re looking for something for the whole family to enjoy, check out Good Store’s board and card game collection. We sell a broad range of games. One popular game is Dutch Blitz, which was developed in 1937 in Pennsylvania by Werner Ernst George Muller who was a German immigrant. The game is fast paced, interactive and so high energy that there is even a jumbo size, which is perfect to play on teams for camps, schools and youth groups. We sell popular games such as Settlers of Catan, Ticket to Ride, along with expansion packs, and several versions of Monopoly as well as classics such as Sorry, Yahtzee, Candyland, Uncle Wiggly, and so many more.
When the weather is nice, spending time outdoors is a must! We carry a large variety of yard games and game balls to keep you active. Spikeball is a fun and fast-paced game that is a cross between volleyball and foursquare. We sell both a Spikeball Standard Set as well as a Pro Spikeball Set. We also offer a few accessories such as a glow in the dark spikeball, and a SpikeBrite attachment for your net. From Franklin Sports we offer yard games such as spyderball, horseshoes, cornhole, and pickleball, just to name a few. We have Molten volleyballs – the official volleyball of the men’s NCAA Championships, as well as a couple options from Tachikara and Franklin Sports. We carry a good selection of baseball equipment such as fielding and batting gloves, bat tape, baseballs, etc. from Franklin Sports. We have footballs, soccer balls, dodgeballs, tennis balls, basketballs, badminton, bocce ball sets and much more. We sell brass quoits sets from Fisher’s Harness Shop, a local company to us. Disc golf is a fun way to spend time outdoors and we carry a wide variety of discs from Innova Disc Golf, as well as a few disc sets and targets from Franklin Sports. Some unique lawn games you will find at Good’s Store include a handcrafted wooden cornhole game made by Valley Road Woodworks and a croquet set handcrafted by Groffdale. Both of these items are Amish-made, have “heirloom quality” and are local businesses here in Lancaster County.
