'Twas Seeding Time book by John L. Ruth
The American Revolution was a time of turmoil for all people living in the thirteen colonies. For Mennonites (and Amish) living in Pennsylvania, the Revolutionary period presented multiple challenges: the challenge of war, which went against their convictions that Christ calls His followers to a life of love and peace with everyone, even enemies; the challenge of rebellion against the King of Britain and the Penn family, to whom they had promised allegiance; and the challenges of scarcity and sickness, which resulted from a years-long military conflict. Responding to these challenges was difficult, as the Pennsylvania Mennonites suffered alongside their neighbors in the hardships brought on by a prolonged war, a new government bent on making everyone take their side, and disagreements among church leaders on how best to respond to the changing times.
John L. Ruth, one of greatest Mennonite historians, first published 'Twas Seeding Time in 1975. This edition has been revised and expanded.
