Many Hands: Being Good Neighbors in Times of Disaster, edited by Julie Kauffman and Susan Kim, is a rich, colorful journey through the work of Mennonite Disaster Service. Since 1950, MDS has been involved in cleanup, reconstruction, and restoration following almost every natural disaster in the US, as well as some in Canada. Depending on volunteers from a wide range of Amish and Mennonite congregations, MDS is a way to be good neighbors and show love in tangible ways to people suffering losses from natural disasters: floods, hurricanes, tornados, and wildfires. The focus of MDS is restoring or rebuilding homes that have been significantly damaged or destroyed. The work is done by volunteers, carrying on the Anabaptist tradition of mutual aid in times of distress.
This attractive hardcover book documents, in color photos and short testimonies, the impact of being good neighbors in this way. Many people who have experienced loss after the disasters express hope and gratefulness, while volunteers express their joy at being able to serve in this way. People on both sides feel blessed by the work of Mennonite Disaster Service!
