The orphans Henry, Jessie, Violet, and Benny Alden are determined to make it on their own and set out to find a safe place to live. They discover an old, red boxcar that provides shelter from a storm. The boxcar becomes their new home. The Boxcar Children stick together, and in the process they encounter a grandfather.
