During the Revolutionary War, members of a small religious community lived a quiet life in the Epharta Cloister of Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, where they printed copies of the Martyrs Mirror. When George Washington's soldiers demanded unbound copies of the books be surrendered to the army for use in gun wadding, the brothers and sisters of the Cloister were faced with a dreadful dilemma— would a book that called for peace and love be used in war?
