Margaret "Peggy" Rhodes' valiant struggle to shield nonresistant Mennonites and Dunkers (Brethren) is recounted in Peggy's War. Set in the Confederate Shenandoah Valley in Virginia, Peggy covertly sheltered deserters and dodgers in a cellar beneath her bedroom.
Tragically, a significant number of the fugitives were captured by Confederate forces, many of whom were Peggy's cousins. Not only that, her uncle was accused of treason and incarcerated alongside Dunker Elder John Kline. In a cruel twist, Peggy was provided only fifteen minutes to evacuate her residence and barn when General Sheridan set the Valley ablaze.
